Show a class in 10 minutes

For temple and family history consultants, FamilySearch center staff and anyone teaching a ward class. Everything below works on the center’s computers with no account and no names of your own: the sample cards are an invented family.

Watch it in 90 seconds. The sample cards (an invented family) from upload to print. In English, no sound.

Before the class

  • Open templekit.com/app on the computer you’ll show from. Pick the class’s language at the top of the page.
  • Print the flyer, one for each person. It has a QR code to the site and the three steps on one page.
  • If you can, bring one printed card so people can hold it.

The ten minutes

  1. 1 minute

    What it is

TempleKit turns the family name card PDF from FamilySearch into cards that say who each person is to you, colour-coded by grandparent, with a short story on the back. It’s free, and there’s nothing to sign up for.

  2. 2 minutes

    Open the sample cards

Press “Try it with sample cards.” Three cards from an invented family open. On the Fronts step, pick how one of them is related and press Make the fronts: the side of the family and the colour appear on the card.

  3. 2 minutes

    Draft the backs

On the Backs step, press Draft every back. Show the small map and the lines about life where the person lived. Everything comes from what’s printed on the card.

  4. 1 minute

    Add your own words

Open one card and type a sentence into “Your own words for this back.” It goes first on the back. This is where a memory, a life sketch or a translated record goes.

  5. 2 minutes

    Print

On the Print step, build the file. It’s one two-sided file: Actual Size, flip on long edge. Mention the calibration page for printers whose backs don’t line up, and the card stock that tears apart with no cutting.

  6. 2 minutes

How to start with their own names

In FamilySearch: Temple, then Reservations. Select names, print family name cards, and save the PDF instead of printing it. Then upload it at templekit.com/app. Hand out the flyer and take questions.

And now, my dearly beloved brethren and sisters, let me assure you that these are principles in relation to the dead and the living that cannot be lightly passed over, as pertaining to our salvation. For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation, as Paul says concerning the fathers—that they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect.

Questions

Do patrons need Claude or another AI account?

No. Every step works without one. A paid Claude plan can add family details from FamilySearch, but it’s optional, and the cards are complete without it.

Will the temple accept these cards?

The front is FamilySearch’s own card with its QR code and Family Ordinance Request number left as they are. Before anything is printed, TempleKit checks that every QR code still scans to its own card’s number, and it refuses to make the file if one doesn’t. Print at Actual Size so the code isn’t shrunk.

What happens to a patron’s PDF?

It’s sent to our server only to read it and build the printed pages. It isn’t stored there, and labels and stories stay in that browser. On a shared center computer, patrons can press start over when they’re done.

Can patrons print at the center?

Yes, on any printer that prints two-sided, or one side at a time with the stack turned over. The center can also print just the fronts on plain paper. The temple itself prints FamilySearch’s plain cards, not TempleKit’s.

Does it work for patrons who speak another language?

Yes. The site is in many languages, and the cards keep FamilySearch’s own words for 46 card languages.

Is it really free?

Yes, for every family. It’s kept going by donations, and nobody is asked for one to use it.
