Ancestor trip planner
Your tree stays in your browser. Only place names are sent to OpenStreetMap to find them on the map.
1. Your family
Use the tree you saved in the family tree tool, open a GEDCOM file, or try the sample family. Nothing is uploaded.
Add places by hand
A farm someone told you about, a church from a family story. It joins the search and the trip.
2. Where are you going?
Type a town, county, region or country, or click the map. Then choose how far from there to look.
Click the map to place your arrival point.
Finding places sends only place names (never a person's name) to OpenStreetMap, one a second. Answers are remembered in this browser, so each place is asked about once.
39And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Is my family tree uploaded?
No. Your tree, your GEDCOM file and the trip you build stay in this browser. To put places on the map, the page sends only place names (such as “Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands”) to OpenStreetMap, never a person's name.
What about living people?
They are never shown or printed. Anyone marked as living, and anyone born in the last 110 years with no death recorded, is left out.
Why does finding the places take a while?
The free OpenStreetMap service allows one lookup a second. The page first checks which countries and states reach your trip, so most places are skipped, and it remembers every answer in this browser. The second time is much faster.
How exact are the places?
Old place names change, so a stop marked approximate is placed at the middle of the town or region rather than the building. Always check the source before you drive. Homes are placed by street address only when OpenStreetMap finds the street near the town.
Where do the sources come from?
From the citations in your GEDCOM file: the source title, the page or entry, any text copied from the record and any notes. Add sources to each event in your family tree software, then open the file here.
Does TempleKit search Find a Grave for me?
No. A button copies the cemetery's name and opens Find a Grave or BillionGraves in a new tab, and you paste it into their search. You do the searching, on their site, under their terms.
